Poté, co jsme prošli už snad desátým rámem a skener opět zkontroloval obsah našich batohů, byla nám cesta do budovy parlamentu zpřístupněna. Sestoupali jsme do suterénu, kde se nachází interaktivní expozice týkající se nejenom parlamentu, ale i dalších evropských institucí. 

Ujal se nás anglicky mluvící průvodce, který nám vysvětlil, jak jednotlivé interaktivní aktivity fungují. Na závěr jsme zhlédli video o EU a pak si mohli celou expozici ještě sami projít. Dozvěděli jsme se, jak parlament pracuje, o čem rozhoduje, s jakými institucemi spolupracuje a podobně.  

Evropský parlament má hlavní sídlo Štrasburku, většinu výborů v Bruselu a sekretariát v Lucemburku. Nyní zde zasedá 720 poslanců, z toho 21 jsou ti čeští – počet zástupců se odvíjí od počtu obyvatel (nejmenší možný počet poslanců je 6). Poslanci přímo zastupují občany EU, schvalují zákony, rozpočet a důležité dohody a rozšíření EU. Kontrolují také ostatní evropské instituce – hlavně Evropskou komisi složenou z 27 komisařů (jeden za každý stát), které mohou klást otázky nebo ji dokonce odvolat. Jednoduše řečeno, parlament je ten, co má všechno pod palcem. 

Během návštěvy nejen této expozice, ale institucí obecně, jsme si víc, než kdy předtím uvědomovali, jak komplexní naše Unie vlastně je. Její fungování je založeno na spolupráci členských států a leč si to v každodenním životě neuvědomujeme, neměli bychom existenci EU brát jako samozřejmost.

 

European Parliament

After we had passed what felt like the tenth frame and the scanner once again checked the contents of our backpacks, we were finally allowed to enter the parliament building. We went down to the basement, where an interactive exhibition is located, focusing not only on the European Parliament but also on other European institutions.

We were welcomed by an English-speaking guide who explained how the individual interactive activities work. At the end, we watched a video about the European Union and then had some time to explore the exhibition on our own. We learned how the Parliament works, what it decides on, and which institutions it cooperates with, among other things.

The European Parliament has its main seat in Strasbourg, most of its committees in Brussels, and its secretariat in Luxembourg. It currently has 720 Members of the European Parliament, including 21 from the Czech Republic. The number of representatives from each country depends on its population.

Members of the Parliament directly represent the citizens of the European Union. They pass European laws, approve the budget, and decide on important agreements and EU enlargement. They also oversee other European institutions – especially the European Commission, which consists of 27 commissioners, one from each member state. Members of Parliament can question it, evaluate its work, and even dismiss it if necessary. Simply put, the Parliament plays a very important role in the functioning of the European Union.

During the visit not only to this exhibition but also to the European institutions in general, we became more aware than ever of how complex the European Union really is. Its functioning is based on cooperation between member states, and although we may not always realize it in everyday life, we should not take its existence for granted.
